ENT surgery

Paediatric surgery

The following ENT paediatric surgical procedures are nearly in all cases done as a day case keeping the stress level for you as parents and especially for your child as low as possible. Your child will be ready to get up and go home within a few hours.

Adenotomy: ("Adenoid removal")

If the laryngeal tonsil (also known as "adenoid") is enlarged, this will lead to an increased susceptibility to inflammations of the middle ear which causes the eustachian tube to dislodge (auditory tube). This results in the cells lining the middle ear to produce fluid which accumulates in the middle cear. With fluid blocking the middle ear, it becomes harder for sound to pass through to the inner ear. This can lead to impaired hearing and retarded learning and speech development which can affect a child's development tremendously. The surgical removal of the laryngeal tonsil will be carried out with a gentle short anaesthesia endoscopically through the mouth as an outpatient procedure.

Myringotomy

If a "glue ear condition" has persisted for a while due to enlarged adenoids there will be an additional small laser cut in the ear drum and fluid will be sucked from the middle ear. If the fluid is very thick, the insertion of a grommet might be necessary. The grommet will fall out automatically after a few months and subsequently the ear drum will heal up entirely.

Laser-reduction of nasal concha

During childhood the combination of enlarged adenoids and enlarged nasal concha often occurs. Using laser or precision radio frequency probes any excess cavernous tissue will be reduced painlessly without any tamponade and so enable nasal breathing without problems.

Day case procedure: Partial removal of enlarged palatal tonsil

An enlargement of the palatal tonsils in children can cause persisting problems like snoring, difficulty swallowing, loss of appetite along with failure to thrive as well as being prone to middle ear infections. With the latest high frequency radio therapy and super pulsed laser technology we can remove the major part of the tonsil. This "gentle" method is done as a day case procedure. The pain usually suffered following a traditional tonsil operation is reduced drastically. More importantly, the immunologic competent tonsil tissue meaning the body's defence system is maintained completely.
